Are You Still Riding with Training Wheels?
Have you ever had the experience of teaching a child to ride a bicycle? Often to help the child start off, training wheels will be fitted to the bike. These provide a sense of security and safety that they won’t get hurt as they give learning to ride a go.
As the child’s skill develops, they become less dependent upon the training wheels, until the big day comes when they venture out without the ‘security’ of the trainers for the first time. It can be daunting, however the exhilaration they experience as they are finally able to ride without assistance is priceless.
Often in our lives we have added “training wheels” to what we do, coping mechanisms that we have developed to help us navigate through the challenges of life and to manage our hurts and brokenness. While these can help us they also stop us from experiencing true freedom.
God’s heart is to see us live in His freedom. He wants us to place our security and confidence in Him, and not in second best substitutes that cannot deliver what only He can. Part of being a disciple of Christ is allowing God to do that work in us, it can be hard and fearsome at times, but when we trust Him, the joy and freedom we experience is matchless. Time to remove our training wheels and trust Him.
