Strength & Dignity

The modern celebration of Mothers’ Day first began in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew’s Methodist church in West Virginia. Anna had begun campaigning to make Mothers’ day a recognised holiday in the US in 1905, the year her mother Ann Reeves Jarvis died. Ann Jarvis had been a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil war and had created Mothers’ Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Anna Jarvis wanted to honour her mother by continuing the work she started and to set aside a day to honour all mothers, because she believed a mother is, “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world”.

This week, we honour our mothers and the mother figures in our lives and thank God for their kindness, tears, strength, and dignity.

She is clothed in strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.Proverbs 31:25-31

Happy Mother’s Day!
